In Year 12 and 13 of the IB diploma programme the students take part in a long term research project called the Extended Essay. The students choose a topic they are interested in, develop a research question and are questioned throughout the process by a supervisor who is an IB teacher. The research project begins in February of Year 12 and continues until November in Year 13. Students are expected to carry out extensive background reading from reliable sources and collect primary data where appropriate.

One of our IB students, Maia Gilsenan, is looking to see if there is a significant relationship between cardiovascular exercise and a healthy pregnancy. She would like to invite our community to provide information on their pregnancy and advice from medical professionals. We thank you in advance.

Dear parents,
My name is Maia, I am a Year 12 student at St. Julian's School and I am asking for your help in conducting research for my Biology Extended Essay on  ‘To what extent does preterm cardiovascular exercise maintain expected change in blood pressure and weight?'
The EE is an independent research essay that all students complete as part of the IB diploma in Year 12 and Year 13.
I would like to collect data on exercise, medical advice and pregnancy.
The questionnaire is anonymous (checked by the school's Data Protection Officer) and the information collected will be used only in my essay. If you have any questions you can contact my Extended Essay supervisor Ms Stedman jstedman@stjulians.com (Head of Biology).

Thank you very much for taking the time and helping me collect very useful information.
