Early Years Learning

The children in Nursery have had such an exciting start to the summer term.
It all started with dinosaur footprints being discovered in the corridors, in the forest and in the secret garden! A favourite story, Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs created excitement and prompted a lot of new language. The children were quick to learn tricky dinosaur names, what foods they ate and how they moved and stimulated the children’s play and learning to go in many and varied directions.
The children extended their play by filling their buckets with other toys of interest - unicorns, dragons, trolls and fairies. Three weeks later the magic and excitement continue. Fantasy lands are being created and the buzz of children leading their own learning is a joy to see and hear.

Reception classes have been learning all about ‘Minibeasts’ as part of our new topic, which has sparked a sense of awe and wonder across the year group!
All classes have spent lots of time outside in our beautiful woodland area, where the children have been searching for creatures, identifying them and exploring a variety of habitats. To support this, each class has been taking care of their own silkworms (Silky, Sammy and Stella!), learning more about lifecycles and beginning to use scientific language to talk about changes they observe.
Using recycled materials each class has been designing and making their own ‘sock caterpillars’ as part of their Expressive Arts and Design learning, and we will be using these over the next few weeks to be learning all about length and how to measure accurately.
