The yearly TOPAS LX challenge is a coding contest for Secondary School students in Lisbon organised by Universidade NOVA of Science and Technology. It is a four-hour-long challenge where teams of 2-3 students are given seven complex challenges and need to solve as many as they can within the shortest amount of time. The programming languages team can use are Python, JAVA, C++ or Pascal.

TOPAS LX is a great opportunity for our students to showcase and apply their computational thinking and coding skills using JAVA. Beyond being courageous to participate in a public coding event and compete against others, collaboration and communication were also key skills required by the teams to work together to code solutions.

Two teams represented St. Julian’s this year: Cream++, which came third, was formed by Rayan Mahmoud, David Cortes and Miguel Pereira while the other one, the Hugo Bob team, consisted of Vlad Sheydorov, Giacomo Luraschi and Yihao Liu. They showcased fantastic problem solving, coding and teamwork skills. Well done boys!

Special thanks to Mr Brooke, their Computer Science teacher and Universidade NOVA for organising such an amazing event.
