St. Julian’s Celebrates the European Day of Languages
On Monday 26th September, our students and staff came to school prepared for a truly multilingual day.
Last week, in anticipation of the European Day of Languages, our Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Mr David Crow, shared his own language learning journey with students from Years 7-13 and encouraged them to reflect upon the incredible power of language learning and linguistic diversity in achieving greater intercultural collaboration and understanding.
And so, on Monday 26th, students were greeted at the Main Gate with a playlist of foreign language hits worthy of Eurovision’s highly coveted doze points and began each lesson of the day with a Guess the language fact file and the challenge to respond to the register in the target language (bonus points to any students who managed all six languages!).
Also on Monday morning, a number of our wonderful Year 13 French B and Spanish B students visited the Primary school to read a hand-picked selection of foreign language stories to some of our littlest linguists. And for those unable to join, our remarkable Year 12 Spanish B students created and shared two amazing audiobook adaptations of Coco and Encanto (apologies to our colleagues in the Primary who will most probably have Recuérdame and No se habla de Bruno stuck in their heads for weeks to come…!).
At lunchtime, while students were treated to a feast of delicacies from around Europe (thank you to our amazing catering team for the incredibly creative and tasty menu!), staff enjoyed musing over some fascinating language facts, and a number of colleagues were even brave enough to sit at one of our target language tables, where they were able to gobble their goulash in German, slurp their soup in Spanish, or polish off their pasta in French!
Perhaps the most special treat of the day, however, was a fantastic tutor time quiz, in which students watched a video of twenty of their secondary classmates speaking in twenty different languages and were challenged to guess each one. A HUGE thank you to those very brave students who agreed to participate in the making of the quiz! The winning tutor group will be announced this Friday.
With over 57 different nationalities represented in our student body, St. Julian’s is truly an international school, and the MFL Faculty could not be prouder of the curiosity, courage and collaboration our students have displayed during this very special celebration of the European Day of Languages 2022.
