IB Music Students organise “PROTEST MUSIC OF THE 1970s” Concert
As part of the HL IB Music course Students were challenged to collaboratively organise a a ‘real life’ music event. The event had to be planned, rehearsed and executed by the students themselves and was a huge success.
Our Year 12 and Year 13 HL students, working as one group, decided to focus on protest songs of the 1970s and began researching protest music from different countries. They discovered a wealth of songs in different styles, with the common theme of injustice and discrimination. This included anti-war messages, environmental issues, apartheid in South Africa, the Portuguese revolution, the Brazilian military dictatorship, racism and domestic violence.
The songs were all introduced by the students who outlined the context and sentiment of each followed by a video recording of the song or a live performance by the students themselves. A student composition was also played.
I was absolutely enthralled by the work they produced. The musical items were excellent, well rehearsed and their lyrics beautifully communicated. The focus was thought provoking and very well presented. The students were professional in their approach and the evening was an absolute joy. Congratulations to our students!
