Food waste is a major problem that affects us all. According to the World Food Programme, “one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally”, which accounts for 1.3 billion tons per year. On the other hand, according to the World Health Organisation, as many as 828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021. This is a problem that also affects us at school: every day a large amount of food is wasted in the canteen, which leads to landfill accumulation. As a solution, we created a composting area in the school for educational purposes and environmental conservation.

The students from the Bilingual Curriculum will be responsible for collecting the food waste, already separated by the canteen staff, and taking it to the composting site, where it will become fertilised soil. This enriched soil can be utilised to grow more vegetables, enhancing the sustainability of the school's gardening initiatives and also aiding in the reduction of food waste. Furthermore, it’s a hands-on learning experience about waste reduction and sustainable practices, which will hopefully have a lasting impact on the lives of those involved.
