This year, St. Julian’s hosted SJMUN, our first-ever MUN Conference and the first middle school student-led MUN Conference in Portugal. SJMUN was a one-day conference intended solely for lower secondary school students. The SJMUN secretariat was proud to welcome over one hundred students from seven different international schools around Portugal. Her Excellency, the British Ambassador, Lisa Bandari, also made a guest appearance at the opening ceremony. Throughout the conference, the SJMUN secretariat was exceptionally proud to see delegates diligently debating and constantly demonstrating the 6C's.

This year, the SJMUN Secretariat was proud to present two committees, each an important and unique branch of the UN: the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council of the UN. The first committee presented was the General Assembly, a staple committee for all MUN conferences. It consisted of over 80 delegates paired together in order to represent over 40 countries' unique opinions on Artificial Intelligence, one of the most pressing issues in our modern society. The Economic and Social Council of the UN, the second committee to be presented in the conference, hosted 20 advanced delegates, passing over 7 ground-breaking resolutions. Diplomatic relationships were thoroughly explored, allowing students to gain deep insights into the complexities of international relations and the importance of negotiation and compromise.

Overall, the feedback from students and faculty was overwhelmingly positive. Reflecting on the debates and resolutions that took place, it is evident that the MUN experience not only broadened our understanding of global issues but also strengthened our community spirit and collaborative abilities. The event was organised and run by the Secretariat with the guidance and support of Mr Hooper. We would like to thank the support staff at St. Julian’s, who were incredibly helpful and supportive, and without them, the event would not have been possible. Looking forward, we are excited to announce that plans for the next JMUN conference are already underway for next May.
