Breaking News From Y1 And Y2!
The Year 1 children have been learning about ‘Our Wonderful World!’ This all started from the lovely story called 'Here We Are' by Oliver Jeffers. The children were immediately hooked. From this, we moved onto learning about different types of human and physical geographical features on our planet, the different continents, oceans and countries that we know. Children have explored our fabulous planet through the use of maps and ´Google Earth´. From this, we have enjoyed listening and working from a range of stories from different cultures and countries around the world. As we are now focusing on Portugal and looking at our local area (Carcavelos). In Maths, we have been looking at halving and doubling numbers. We had made use of our outdoor area for children to solve and consolidate mathematical concepts.
In Year 2, the current topic is ‘Wild Things’, and the students have been having a blast searching for minibeasts and examining them through a magnifying glass.
They have been learning about habitats, ecosystems and food chains.
They also read the story ‘What the Ladybird heard’ by Julia Donaldson and used the mathematical vocabulary of position, direction and movement to explain how the robbers moved around the farm. How lucky we are to have so much lovely outdoor space to learn in!
To extend this learning, the children used Beebots to program directions and completed challenges to move the Beebots (photos 4 and 5). They had to use the words left, right, forwards, backwards, clockwise, anti-clockwise, quarter turn, half turn and rotate.
