The International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) invited 60 young people from China, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Portugal, Switzerland, UK and USA; to share their experiences of 2020. These stories were then sent to a young person from a different part of the world to be performed, and these performances were then filmed by a core group of participating film students with original music also created by a number of the young people involved.

Focusing on the unique approach to Verbatim Theatre called the Hear Us Out Technique developed by artist Dinos Aristidou, this project captures the experiences of the events of 2020 from the unique perspective of young people. These are Stories of the extraordinary year of 2020 that have been shared and travelled across borders creating connections between young people in different parts of the world.

The following Year 10 students all made outstanding contributions; Cassia Bandeira, Emerson Lopes, Georgia Evans-Brown, Laura Araújo, Poppy Thompson, Tomás Andrade. Having worked from January to May 2021 the long-awaited final edit is ready to be screened! We are so proud of their commitment and the quality of their performance and am sure you will be too.

This is a 2-day event screening ISTA’s first-ever Digital Global Production. And the finished productions are approximately 1 hour in length:

ISTA PERFORMANCES

‘Because, you know, we were kind of just being thrown into something very new. And the unknown is scary.’

When a global pandemic closes down the theatres, a troupe of international players decide to travel across time zones and through the rocky broadbands to tell their stories and bear witness to a year of turmoil and discovery.

Sunday 26th September 2021 – Premiere of Diary of an extraordinary year at 12:30 pm (13:30 CET)

‘And, you know, just like all things, you know, time passes, so it won’t always be like this. And I just need to keep my head up and strive to be the best I can be.’

A collection of verbatim monologues gives us a month to month account of the inner worlds and experiences of young people around the world during the extraordinary year of 2020. How do you capture a year? How do you capture a moment in time?
