We would like to thank the Students, Staff and Parents who participated in St Julian's first Children's Mental Health Week. It was great to see our whole community recognising the importance of this week. We hope it will become an annual event on the St Julian's calendar.

PRIMARY ACTIVITIES

During Mental health week, the primary school continued, as we always do, supporting the students with their emotional development.

One of the focuses was to highlight the knowledge and understanding of "The Zones of regulation." The Zones of Regulation is a wonderful scheme that works on the principle of having four coloured zones which help identify how someone is feeling. And we took the opportunity this week to create activities that allowed teachers to refresh those with children.
Sharing a little more detail on how we experience this in class, many teachers use a "pot system" in their rooms. This involves having 4 pots related to the 4 zones. The children can put their names on a label in the relevant pot in the morning and can move it throughout the day.

This is such an effective, non-threatening way of identifying if any children need a little extra nurturing or support from SSD.

Ideally, the children learn best and tend to feel happier in the Green Zone:

However, if a child does feel they are in any of the other Zones, the adults and their peers can support them and remind them of pre-taught strategies or give them new ideas.

Here are some examples of strategies to help the children SELF regulate:

Working as a team is vital to a child's happiness and success.

If any adult feels that the student would benefit from support from either our Psychologist, Mrs Joana Lobo or Head of SSD; Mrs Ceri Grunewald-Davies (Mrs G.D); a meeting will take place, and parents are consulted, and emotional support is put in place. Parents are also very welcome to contact us if they have any concerns about their child's emotional well being (mental health).
