In the Foundation years, wellbeing is promoted through positive relationships in a warm and caring environment; through play which makes a powerful contribution to children’s wellbeing, development and learning, through creativity and through language development.   We need to help children understand their feelings and teaching and using emotional language will help give them the vocabulary they need to understand their own feelings, as well as other people’s. We need to give children the space to be creative, to sing and dance and to play, to sing and dance.

It is also important for children to take time to rest and experience moments of stillness, so this week as part of the Children's Mental Health Week, the children in Nursery and Reception have been trying out some different mindfulness activities, as well as enjoying a lot of imaginative play.

The Reception children have spent a good deal of the day outside and down in the 'forest' where they have been exploring, playing and being creative, as well as doing some mindfulness in the outdoors.  This has been complemented by activities centred on the topic of Mr Grumpy’s Outing by John Burningham.

This week in Nursery, the children have also been practising some mindfulness but they have also been stimulated by the book The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr which inspired a lot of creativity and play, and this included enjoying a tea party at the Soft Rock Café.
