Despite all that has happened over the past two years, the Visual Art IB students of 2022 have topped the end of their Internal Assessment with a stunning exhibition. It was imperative that this show take place; this was the year group who had not had the opportunity to have a GCSE exhibition and showcase their efforts and skills to family and friends two years beforehand. Therefore it was vital that this cohort have their work see the light of day, taken out from the 'hobbit hole' of the Art Department and be allowed to 'breathe' in the open space of an exhibition site.

This took place at Pinheiros Mansos in Areia, Cascais, on Friday, 18th February and continued over the weekend. With a careful eye on being 'covid friendly', we were able to welcome family, friends and members of the St Julian’s Community to celebrate the achievements of these graduating IB Art students. Although this year toasted without a glass or canape in hand, the important thing was that it happened and that the focus was fully on the diverse, mature, and skilled artwork that they had achieved.

The students eloquently and enthusiastically explained their exhibitions to viewers as their Curatorial Rationales and Intentions were scrutinized as to why they made their artwork. The personality, interests and passions of them all shone through their pieces. As teachers of these students, Ms Dore, Ms Davey and Mrs Burridge were extremely proud of the students and their hard work.

The success of this show is a testament not only to the students’ talents but to the Department’s commitment to delivering art education that breeds risk-taking, conceptual engagement and harnesses strong technical skill; artwork made by the head, hands and heart.

Huge thanks go to the parents for all of their support over the years. Plus, a massive thank you to all those involved in helping to set up the show. Projects of this scale are truly enormous feats of planning, hard work and patience. However, special thanks must be given to the School Events Team, the Maintenance Staff, Admin and Support Staff plus, of course, my truly wonderful colleagues in the Art Department.

I hope this video gives a taster as to the quality of the work.
