As part of the school development plan, the primary team have been doing some professional development training on enquiry-based learning in art. In the first session, we started by looking at a model for teaching art that allows children opportunities to work through the creative process and we considered where an enquiry-based approach could fit into this more creative model. We then looked at different types of questions that allow children to make deeper and more careful enquiries about the work of known artists and the work they themselves are producing.  We ended the session by looking at starting points. We explored different ways to help children generate their own ideas for artwork.

In the second session, we looked at how sketchbooks can be used to support children’s artwork. In particular, we focused on how children can use sketchbooks to collect inspiration and generate ideas for their artwork. The teachers had a go at producing their own sketchbook pages generating ideas around the theme of identity.

Next term we will be following up in our final session by spending time planning to incorporate enquiry into our art projects for term 3. Watch this space!
