Secondary Library - A Transformed Space
During the summer, the school’s Paulo Lowndes Marques Library received a small makeover to adjust to the current students, teachers and staff requirements.
The school library is a multi-faceted space, accessible physically and virtually, providing a rich collection of information resources and quality curation of fiction, representing diverse authorial voices and multiple languages and traditions.
It is a safe space where students can pursue their curiosity, creativity and individual learning styles and explore topics of interest in a secure and inviting environment.
It is an inspirational place for the nurture of literacy and reading journeys and a collaborative social space for students during break time and lunchtime.
Last renovated in 2004 and heavily used throughout the academic year, the library’s temporary closure and disruption in services caused by the pandemic marked a turning point. It became obvious that despite the continuing appeal of its resources, the library’s interior was drab and tired and needed a major overhaul.
Our priority is to make more efficient use of existing space for students, staff, and their technology needs and to create a vibrant, contemporary and inviting atmosphere through the use of colour, more natural light, expanded front-facing display, and comfortable modular furniture.
The areas selected for initial intervention were the creation of a new leisure reading and slat wall display zone at the front of the library and a dedicated area conducive to individual study and research at the rear. This space is decorated with acoustic tiles, curtains and study pods, which tastefully and effectively dampen sound from the communal area.
