On Wednesday, 15 February the whole of Year 3 boarded two buses and we made our way to the famous Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.  We were going to see a visiting exhibition called ‘Superstar Pharaohs’ as well as using the opportunity to see the amazing permanent collection at the Museum.

The visit coincided with the Year 3 topic on Ancient Egypt. The children have spent weeks investigating this fascinating ancient civilisation and have been studying everything from the importance of the gods to the remarkable lives of the Pharaohs.

This visit gave the children the opportunity to see for themselves real artefacts that had been carefully preserved from thousands of years ago. The children were able to use their enquiry skills to work out the original use of the artefacts and even had a go deciphering what the hieroglyphics said. The highlight was seeing the enormous stone fist from a statue of Pharaoh Ramses II. It was nearly as big as the children!

Here is what the children thought of the visit:

“On Wednesday the 15th of February my class went to the Gulbenkian museum to see the Egyptian Exhibition. We saw a part of an Ancient pyramid of Egypt.

The class saw a statue of Cleopatra and we saw I Hatshepsut and Ahmose-Nefertari. I ate lunch in the park of the Museum. I liked a rock with hieroglyphics.”

“On Wednesday the 15th of February we went to the Gulbenkian museum and saw the  Egyptian Exhibition. When we arrived we were escorted by two policemen. We saw an Egyptian mask and we had lunch at the park in Gulbenkian.

It was really fun!”

“On Wednesday, 15 February we went to Gulbenkian. I liked the garden, the ancient Egypt Exhibition and the Egyptian crowns. I saw bamboo, ducks, pigeons and Egyptian creations. Facts: 1. Cleopatra was the last pharaoh until the Romans took over ancient Egypt. 2. King Tut holds two Guinness world records - the youngest age when he died and who held the crown the shortest."
