Emily Grant, ISTA artist, led a series of presentations and workshops about ancient Greek theatre with Year 6 students. From understanding the origins of theatre to mastering some of the chorus techniques, the students were inspired and ready to develop their class performances of a Greek myth.

Sea journeys were taken, characters discovered, and monsters slain on this wonderful, imaginative journey. Year 6 students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops they had with Emily Grant last week. As an artist, director, writer and performer, Emily runs her own theatre company as well as works with ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association). She brought a wealth of knowledge about Greek theatre and turned it into an active and practical workshop.

Students dived into the ancient world and imagined all the different areas of a Greek theatre, building their understanding of the birthplace of theatre as we know it today. They explored techniques for building the chorus and understood the importance of this group of performers for telling a story, whether it was tragedy, comedy or satire. All of this knowledge links to their learning of ancient Greece, as well as helping to prepare them with many ideas for use in their performances of a Greek myth, which will be taking place at the end of the term. Emily also led a Year 12 IB theatre workshop on French Farce. She shared some interesting exercises for exploring voice and gesture in Shakespeare texts that will be very useful for Year 7 students currently rehearsing The Tempest.
