Our last webinar, “Parenting in the Digital Age - Challenges and Solutions”, presented by Edel Nolan (Lead Counselor), Michael Brooke (Director of Technology) and Will Harrison (Technology Specialist), covered the effects of social media, family use of technology and practical information and support for parents.

In today's digital age, parenting involves navigating the delicate balance between the advantages and challenges posed by technology. While technology provides invaluable educational resources, enhances social connectivity, and fosters creative expression, it also brings forth concerns such as sleep deprivation, mental health impacts, and the risk of cyberbullying.

As we have heard, It is crucial to set clear limits on screen time, establish device-free times during meals and bedtime, and actively monitor the online activities of young children using parental controls. Open conversations about internet safety, centring around concepts like trust, responsibility, and self-management, are pivotal in fostering a healthy relationship with technology.

To empower our children with responsible technological habits, we should involve them in creating technology agreements. Start early and gradually ease restrictions as trust and maturity grow. Additionally, as parents, we should be mindful of our own technology habits, as they serve as a model for our children.

For a comprehensive guide on parenting in the digital age, explore our Technology Guide for Parents website. It offers practical tips, resources, and information to assist you in fostering a balanced approach to technology.

Several recent social media events have highlighted the importance of ensuring young people have access to age-appropriate platforms and that parents are ensuring that their children are not being exposed to harmful and inappropriate content or putting themselves at risk online.

Let's collaborate to ensure our children embrace the benefits of technology while maintaining a mindful and healthy relationship with the digital world.
