In Primary, Book Week was a very exciting week, with the theme being “A Pocketful of Poems”.

Paul Cookson, the visiting poet, was a huge hit with everyone, entertaining us with his hilarious poems and ukulele playing. He also worked with individual year groups to help them write and perform their own poems. Signed copies of his poetry books quickly sold out. His visit really enriched the children’s learning and appreciation of poetry.

As the theme for Book Week was centred on poetry, classes buddied up to share writing and reading poetry. The children enjoyed meeting with their buddies, and all had much fun (and poetry!).

At lunchtime, children celebrated poetry with Open Mic performances in the playground. For this, children could volunteer to perform a poem they had written themselves or a published poem. There was no shortage of volunteers, and the children thoroughly enjoyed performing and listening to a wide variety of poetry.

On Wednesday after lunch, the WHOLE Primary School dropped everything and read poetry for 2024 seconds!

Throughout the week, students accessed QR Codes to listen to their teachers perform their favourite poems and stuck poems they had written to the poetree display outside the primary library.

To conclude our 'Pocketful of Poems' celebration, all the children across the Primary School gathered in the playground with poems in their pockets to share and wearing headbands illustrating their chosen poems. It was lovely meeting and greeting children from all over the school and listening to them share their favourite poems. It was a great way to finish.
