Over the past 5 weeks, the children have been learning about Poetry. We selected a poem from various poems and have spent the last five weeks analysing it and looking at figurative language. There were several stages:

  • Evaluating the poem: recognising the poem's structure and understanding the rhythm through the iambic meter.
  • Connecting Poems and Music: After the first stage, we looked at music and how poems and music are linked.
  • Then, the editing of the Poem. The children then had to edit the poem by pulling out words or phrases to ensure the poem fit the beat and feeling/meaning behind the words.
  • Finally, students created a range of images. The images created or downloaded were to bring the words to life. This imovie, Memories Poem, is the final piece to this fantastic puzzle.

There has been lots of cross-curricular going on in Y5: IT, MUSIC, DRAMA and ENGLISH all for ONE project. We are extremely proud of all student's efforts and the imovies you created for our English project on Poetry. There is some exceptional writing going on in Upper Primary, which is a credit to all of the teachers who have worked with students throughout the Primary school, enabling our students to become such talented writers.

We would like to highlight an example of the quality of writing in Year 5, with the Poem Be Yourself by Teresa Fonseca 5CM. This poem is not only exceptionally crafted, but it is also a fabulous inspiration to us all!
