When selecting their GCSE options, SJS students are able to choose between Double and Triple Science. One of the opportunities presented by studying Double Science is that students are able to experience the Electives programme.

Electives are short courses, non-examined and designed to stretch students’ horizons by experiencing something new, which will stretch their horizons and develop their skills. Year 10 students have been able to choose from options such as Astronomy, Photography, Nutrition and Fitness, just to name just a few. These new experiences can make students sceptical, but having an open mind can lead to very positive results, as attested by these students:

“As a student that picked double science for their IGCSE. I have electives once or twice a week. Electives are what we do instead of more science lessons; when first choosing this, I was unsure whether it was the right choice, but now I couldn’t be happier. I love electives as it gives me an opportunity to learn and experience new things when it comes to my learning. I love the fact I get to think outside the box and work with people I would never usually be with. Photography, Astronomy and What do you think? These have been my favourites so far. Photography gave me a chance to explore my creative side and develop skills that I will use in the future. Astronomy helped me really understand what lies above us and made me realise how complex and interesting our earth and solar system are. Last but not least, What do you think? This elective tested my thoughts and opinions and encouraged me to share my ideas and my colleague's ideas on certain topics. Overall I have been enjoying my electives and can’t wait to see what lies ahead.”

“I enjoyed myself with the electives I chose for the first term, not only because they were fun but also because they gave me an opportunity to explore different topics that I had not thought I would be interested in until now. An elective that I especially liked was Short Movies, Long Voyages, where we watched short movies from different countries. What I particularly liked about this elective is that we got to learn about different cultures, most important countries that are or were in war situations and how people cope with it.”

“This year, my first elective was Photography with Mr Netcher. I really enjoyed having this elective every week as it expanded my knowledge on a topic I was really keen to know more about. As it was my first elective, I was unsure of what to expect though it changed quickly as I was welcomed immediately, and I was so ready to learn. The lessons were really enjoyable as it is a time when I can learn about topics which I will actually use out of school. As well as having time during the week to have some fun, It also Improved my collaborative skills. Overall, I was really pleased with the outcome of my experience! Thank you, Me Netcher, for making my first elective so enjoyable!”
