PANOS  - Palcos Novos, Palavras Novas - National Theatre Festival

About  PANOS: ‘New Stages, New Words’ is an annual project that commissions original plays from renowned authors to be performed by adolescents. The scripts are developed and finalised after workshops with representative participants from the schools and youth theatre groups enrolled in the festival. In this 15th edition of the project (the fourth to take place at the Dona Maria II, National Theatre) PANOS will present 3 original plays: O Ensaio, de André Tecedeiro,  Irene, de Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, and Duas Pessoas & Uma Ilha Sozinha, de Ondjaki.

About our play: At the beginning of this whole process I was very nervous about directing in Portuguese but also very excited to be offering this opportunity to so many of our secondary students to perform in their mother tongue. This led to some disappointment and also worry that students were so resistant to the idea of performing in Portuguese and very few chose to embrace the challenge and opportunity.

This worry was soon put to one side when the final cast of 9 stepped up and took the stage. I could not be prouder of this amazing group of students whose performances on Friday 21st April blew audiences away with their quality of acting and sense of ensemble. Each member of the group shared their talents and and dedication to bring to life a very challenging script.

The representative jury member from the National Theatre, who came to watch, gave high praise to our students for their mature performance and also their insight into their characters and the themes of the play.

A beautiful piece of theatre that was a pleasure to direct. Who knows, maybe we will be invited to perform to the general public as part of the final selection for the festival!

Sobre a peça: “Duas pessoas sobrevivem numa ilha há muitos anos. Outras quatro pessoas num bote, no meio do mar, avistam ao longe a ilha. Várias revelações estão por acontecer. Ou não. Mas nem a solidão nem o amor são fáceis de conter ou de expor.” Vamos juntos numa viagem às memórias e aos sonhos, onde passado, presente e futuro se interligam numa conversa que tem tanto de onírico como de misterioso.

From the Actors:

Esta experiência do teatro foi única. No início estava nervosa por fazer as audições, porque o grupo tinha pessoas muito talentosas e estava com medo de não me conseguir encaixar bem no grupo. Mas esses nervos e medo acabaram logo em uma semana.
A primeira leitura da peça que fizemos, vou ser honesta, não percebi nada da história, mas ao longo dos meses, fui percebendo a história muito bem. Foi cansativo todos os ensaios, mas valeu tudo a pena.
A peça no final ficou muito bem concebida. Todos nós conseguimos expressar bem as personagens e a peça fez todo o sentido no fim. Não havia mais dúvidas no meu cérebro. O grupo foi super simpático e demo-nos todos muito bem. Os professores ajudaram-nos bastante.
