Supporting Y1 and Y2 Readers at Home
Last week, a group of enthusiastic parents participated in a workshop to learn more about supporting their child’s reading at home.
One of the most important roles that parents can play in their child’s education is supporting and encouraging their child’s reading abilities and love of reading. With this in mind, an enthusiastic group of parents participated in a workshop to explore ways they could support reading at home. The points covered in the workshop were in response to data collected from the survey that went out to all Year 1 and Year 2 parents.
Parents considered why reading is such an important skill and even listened to some ideas from the children themselves. Parents agreed that the most crucial aspect of reading was to inspire creativity, imagination, and curiosity in their children. Challenges to reading at home were shared, and strategies to overcome a lack of motivation were discussed.

Role-play enabled the parents to consider what reading effectively with a child can look like, the different ways to provide feedback when a child is reading, and supporting comprehension. We also acknowledged how much a strong home language can support learning to read in a different language.
By actively engaging in this workshop, these dedicated parents demonstrated their commitment to nurturing their child's reading abilities and fostering a lifelong passion for books. Their willingness to collaborate and share experiences will undoubtedly contribute to creating a supportive reading environment at home.
